Making sense of the Jimmy G trade

Yesterday, Adam Schefter broke the news that the Patriots traded Jimmy Garoppolo for a 2nd Rd pick.  Many Patriot fans are shaking their heads in disbelief.

I am not.

This is a Bill Belichick move if there ever was a Bill Belichick move.  Remember Richard Seymour? Jamie Collins? Chandler Jones?  The only difference is the others were starters before they were traded.  Patriots get all they can out of their star players, then trade them before they need to pay them.  Jimmy is a free agent at the end of the year.  He was drafted in the 2nd Rd so they weren’t able to use the 5th year option.  He’s a backup so they weren’t going to use the franchise tag.  I believe this was the plan the whole time.  They had an insurance policy if Tom Brady either retired or started to (as Max Kellerman would say) fall off a cliff performance-wise.  Jimmy should be grateful for the trade to the 49ers.  They’re going to have around $100 million in salary cap space so he’ll get paid like a king.  They have a promising young coach and a football guy at GM in John Lynch.

There were reports that the Browns were willing to offer 2 1st round picks for Jimmy before the draft.  The reports were refuted so take that for what it is, but I still believe they just wanted to see how Tom Brady would be in his year 40.  The 2nd round pick will be within the first couple picks in the NFL Draft so it’s not like it’s a bum of a guy.  This also proves that Tom Brady is going to play for another 5 years.  I think they draft the heir to the thrown to develop him for 4 years, then hand the keys over once Tom hits 45.

Lastly, I don’t know why there are so many butt-hurt Patriot fans.  Tom Brady is still the quarterback.  Bill Belichick is still the head coach.  Defense is turning itself around.  Sit back and enjoy another Super Bowl run.
